“How can you frighten a man whose hunger is not only in his own cramped stomach but in the wretched bellies of his children? You can’t scare him–he has known a fear beyond every other.” - John Steinbeck – Grapes of Wrath
For many years, we proud fishermen have worked hard, obeyed the rules, and dreamt of better days. In the process we’ve been vilified, victimized, criminalized, marginalized and hyper-consolidated. The sacrifice is about to pay off for the few that remain.
The time to reap the harvest is here, but NOAA/NMFS and the corrupt fisheries councils have decided to mass implement catch and trade fish policies that privatize our public resources into a feudal system. These policies eliminate jobs and are designed to fail in low yield years.
Now, if someone young wants to become a fisherman, in addition to the expense of a boat and equipment, he needs megabucks to buy or rent fish shares. The banksters naturally relish this new scheme. Why is incurring debt necessary to feeding the world? Why should fish ownership be granted in a Ponzi-like fraud scam?
The gifting of “future fish shares forever” creates mailbox fishermen. The financial and physical risk burdens the laborer not the rent-collector/investor. The faux environmentalists are claiming catch shares will help the fish. Conservation is not their goal; redistribution of public resources into the hands of the wealthy. Wal-Mart, Packard, Pew (Sun Oil), Moore, etc. are funding catch shares via EDF (environmental defense fund) and a few sell-out fishing associations.
One of the worst ecological disasters ever was the Dust Bowl era of the ‘30’s. The banks, investors and government played key roles in this destruction. Nature was not the only villain. Please read the http://www.theburningplatform.com/?tag=dust-bowl to understand the causes of the Great Depression and the “Dirty Thirties” and how today we’re going off the same cliff.
We cannot let history repeat itself. We need to demand our public officials take into consideration the human element. The social and economic impacts of the catch and trade scams are being ignored illegally. Stop the theft of fish and the persecution of the workers. We shouldn't need banks-money and debt to go fishing
In the past 16 years every 30 minutes a farmer in India commits suicide. I think we all know the reason; family farming has been consumed by huge agribusiness dependent upon Monsanto’s expensive pesticides, GMO’s and sterile seeds compounded by global competition.
I don’t think the farmers have given up. Perhaps, they’re trying to draw attention to their plight. Gandhi once said that if the Jews had jumped into the sea from cliffs, it would have made the world aware of their situation sooner. Less people would have died during Hitler's terrorism.
For a true democracy to work, the people must be involved. We cannot let the greedy lead, push or volunteer us to go off the cliff. Together we can find solutions. We’ve saved the fish, now let’s save the fishermen from the clutches of the moneyed interests. Let’s put energy into stopping the real threats to our waters-pollution and the corporatization of our oceans.
Abolish all Catch Shares!
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
