In the Gulf, NOAA could not quantify the oil volcano. Nor see oil in the gargantuan plumes, on the seabed, marshes and beaches. Government scientists did not release a realistic estimate on how much oil remains.
We know BP has admitted to using around 1.8 million gallons of the toxic dispersant-Corexit. Many questions remain on the validity of the amount of dispersants used. Riki Ott, marine toxicologist, has sent an open letter to the EPA with documentation of the continued spraying. This contradicts our government agencies claiming the spraying has ceased months ago.
The manufacturer Nalco, tells us no toxicity studies have been conducted on Corexit . Dispersants may also bioaccumulate in fish. Dr. Susan Shaw, Gulf toxicologist, says,”Dispersed oil is more easily absorbed into the cells and organs”. We also know the dispersants take oxygen out of the water and inhaling the fumes hazardous. Some people think the chemicals could be falling down in rain burning crops. Our precious ecosystems should not be part of this sadistic experiment.
This epic Gulf tragedy has unfolded on the internet. Youtube, facebook, blogs, and some unadulterated news media have spoken the truth. Massive amounts of oil, tarballs, fishkills, water-foamy with dispersants, oiled birds and fish are among the visuals.
We’ve heard horror stories about health issues: stuff seeping from people’s ears, bleeding from rectums, headaches and respiratory ailments. We’ve seen pictures of blisters and rashes. We’ve heard stories of burning turtles, planes and Carolina skiffs spraying at night. I’ve watched a video of the Coast Guard denying reporters access to an oiled public beach. The National Park refusing to let anyone film while digging on a beach in Florida and one of our Air Force spraying.
The White House assures us the Gulf seafood is safe to eat. Dr. Jane Lubchenco, NOAA, claims the FDA is using rigorous protocols for testing. The FDA is still working on chemical testing for dispersants. The smell test itself is questionable as is the areas of water chosen and the amounts being tested.
The FDA has lowered the standards on acceptable amounts of PAH’s. (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) Frankly, I’m outraged at the lackadaisical attitude of our government agencies. Cancer causing risks should not be taken lightly. Consumers from around the world are potentially at risk.
Why has the EPA allowed the killing of the marine life and poisoning of our seafood? The use of Corexit, which is banned in the U.K. and certain countries, serves no purpose except for keeping oil out of sight. It appears our government is more concerned about lightening BP’s liability. Why do they not care about our health, wealth and well being? Give us healthcare and then give us disease? Some Gulf fishermen have refused to go fishing because they know the truth.
President Obama wants government control over our waters. His plan will certainly “sell” the greediest our oceans. Zoning oceans for drilling gas and oil, mining gravel, aquaculture, MPLA’s and windmills. His plan for fishermen is a “catch and trade”. Wall Street is anxiously waiting to pounce on fish commodities. Seafood prices will skyrocket.
Our vast oceans are not empty of fish, they are empty of fishermen. This fact was verified by a small plane pilot. He spends much time out there flying over our immense oceans. Fishing boats are a rarity. The oceans have becomedevoid of humans and their fishing contraptions and therefore our oceans are maintaining quite well, he says. That’s in addition to the vast areas of unfishable and unfished bottoms that no one recognizes.
Why all the brouhaha about overfishing? As the Gulf exemplifies, fishermen are stakeholders in the way. We are environmentalists and eyes on the water. Big Oil wants us gone. The oceans are big enough for all users.
This is not about conservation but eradication. The Obama administration cared little about the fish when they aided and abetted BP’s spraying the toxins. Our government accepts killing and poisoning fish yet we can’t catch fish to sell for food. This makes no sense unless you follow the money. This same administration is regulating fishermen into extinction. Why not loosen their arbitrary catch limits?
The insatiable greed of our mega-corporations must be stopped. One solution would be a 28th Amendment-Separation of Corporation from State. Also necessary is the Fair Elections Act and we need term limits for politicians. If polygraph tests were accurate enough, politicians should have to take them.
We the people have got to start exercising our Constitutional rights. They are slipping away from us. Thomas Jefferson said, "Experience has shown, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny."
By being complacent, we are all guilty.
